6 Things You Can Do To Encourage Kids to Get Active
Kids must have their recommended time for physical activity every day to keep them physically healthy (and in a way, even mentally fit too). However, nowadays, there are more reasons for children to be sedentary. Digital technology and the internet can effectively influence the young ones to stay in bed or on the couch for a day if you let them. Entertainment is now in the palm of their hands.
This does not mean you cannot encourage your kid to exercise or commit to any physical activity. If you care for your kid’s health, here are six things you can do to encourage them to get active:
1. Let them understand the importance of physical exercise.
Always start by letting them understand why they are doing something. Explain why there is a need for them to engage in physical play or exercise. You can let them view videos on the benefits of playing and engaging in physical activities for kids and adults. Additionally, orient them with the negative impact of a non-active lifestyle too.
2. Establish a daily physical activity for the kids.
Set a daily routine for the children. Be a role model too. Join them every time you dance for twenty minutes in the morning. You can also follow instructional exercise videos and do it in the afternoon if you and your kids are not morning persons. The key here is consistency. Do this continuously for at least 21 days to establish a habit.
3. Let them associate physical activity with things they enjoy.
Toddlers usually have their favourite songs and nursery rhymes. For them to enjoy physical activity, use their favourite songs and put dance steps to them. If the song already has a dance step, learn it. Then, use the song for your daily physical exercise. You won’t believe how many calories you can burn just by putting “Baby Shark” on the loop and dancing to it with your toddler.
4. Let them help with household chores – with a twist.
Want to let them engage in physical activity and help at the same time? Organize a reward system every time they do household chores. Sweeping the floor, washing the dishes, making the bed, doing the laundry – list down the chores they can help you with and put a corresponding perk or reward if they do it. You can also put a milestone – if they do all household chores, they get an additional special reward!
5. Get a private lesson for the kids.
This is a great time to introduce kids to martial arts or sports. You can enroll the kids to learn taekwondo, basketball, tennis, badminton, volleyball, or other sports. Taking lessons in martial arts or sports will not only make them physically active, but it will also teach them discipline and sportsmanship,
6. Set-up a bouncy castle surprise.
Want to surprise your kids? Set up a small size jumping castle in your backyard or garage. You can coordinate with a rental company to find the right jumping castle hire Brisbane inflatable for your indoor surprise. A bouncy castle will encourage them to play and engage in physical activity. You can get a jumping castle hire Brisbane inflatable for your family’s special events and activities.
